A film concept by Serena Potter and Eric Minh Swenson. Music by Timothy Robert Smith Serena Potter: At a pivotal moment in my life a friend said to me “you are not Wonder Woman”. Through tears I replied “but I want to be”. For over a year I have had that interaction simmering in my head. The concept for this film first came as an idea for a painting. Over six months or so the idea came into focus and as it did I realized that the process of attaining the reference photos for the painting could be art itself. At this point I started to see it as a performance which could be caught on film, to reach a wider audience. My message is one of female empowerment. You get hit by the trials of life; the eggs represent relationships, home, jobs, faith, children, health issues, finances, love, sex, anything that a woman works for, nurtures and protects. At times though these things break, crack, get thrown back at you. You get knocked down, but you get back up. This is the real Wonder Woman. She has weaknesses and she gets beaten by life, but what makes her Wonder Woman is that eventually she gets up, cleans off, and keeps going. I am often asked why I am willing to suffer pain for my art. For many years I have endured a chronic illness, the Parvo B 19 virus. It has been the boss who decides when I will be in pain, when I will have the life sucked out of me and for how long. When I suffer pain for my art, I am the boss, I am calling the shots. I decide when and for how long and instead of sucking the life out of me, it affirms my life. Art reminds me that I am significant, that I matter, that we all matter and that this virus will not have the final say. I have confronted the Wonder Woman in me and do not find her lacking. In spite of my limitations, I do indeed feel like a Wonder Woman and I hope that my art will encourage other women to call upon their super powers.
