Dettmer’s most recent body of work Brian Dettmer: Elemental explores iconic forms and symbols from his early childhood education. Technology can often render history and raw materials as obsolete and Dettmer expands this perspective by reformatting for the future. Thesauruses, state flags, encyclopedia sets, and paperback books have been deconstructed by significance and function, and then restructured to communicate a uniquely modern and well preserved vocabulary of art. The exhibition travels from the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia to the Fullerton Public Library and will conclude at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Images of the MOCA Georgia installation can be found here.

The Fullerton Public Library’s presentation of Brian Dettmer: Elemental Selections features eight sculpted books and a full exhibition catalog Brian Dettmer: Elemental which is available for purchase in the Library Administration office and below. The public is invited to attend the Opening Reception on Friday, February 1st, 2013 from 6:00-10:00pm during the Downtown Fullerton Art Walk. The exhibit will close April 28th, 2013 and then travel to the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art from May 30, 2013 – August 18, 2013. View the exhibition here.
